Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has revealed the decision to offload Facundo Pellistri was made because competition for his place in the team was too high.
The Uruguayan international has struggled to establish himself as a regular for the Red Devils since joining from Peñarol in 2000, making just 25 senior appearances and failing to score.
After agreeing a £6.8m move to Greek side Panathinaikos, the Netherlands boss praised Pellistri for his potential and ability to develop, but said the competition within the team was high.
Amad Diallo and Marcus Rashford started out wide for United in their opening Premier League fixture against Fulham. With Alejandro Garnacho and Antony both also on the bench.
“He’s a very talented player, developed very well last year ยูฟ่าเบท. But we have a lot of competition on the wings,” Ten Hag said.
“We look at what we want as a team, but every player has their own perspective and at the moment we have players who have the potential to compete for that space.”
“We can’t give him the right perspective, but he has a lot of potential and wants to play to improve and develop. He will have that opportunity at Panathinaikos.”
